Wind Diy
A Simple Wind DIY Project
By: Ryan Narendra
With the latest energy crisis on our hands, many people are looking for alternative fuels and other energy sources to help alleviate the tension. Some are definitely interested in saving money while petroleum prices continue to skyrocket. Others are looking to make their lives greener and are looking towards future technologies with open minds and hearts. Ironically, though, it is not in the future where much of these innovative ideas reside, but in the past. For example, hydroelectric power utilizes the energy stored in water flow that was originally conceived in villages near waterfalls. Similarly, windmills evolved into the giant turbines that are still popular today. Wind DIY projects are actually quite popular with the current home-made crowd, and it’s easy to see why.
You can make your own wind turbine with some standard materials for not very much money. Here is a general list of materials that you can use:
1. Square tubing2. Floor flange’or rotating dolly wheel3. Nipple4. Self-tapping screws5. Amp-blocking diode6. Motor bolts7. PVC pipe8. Lightweight metal (for the tail balance)9. Bolts and washers10. Paper and tape
Of course you’ll also need a small Treadmill Motor, which you can find at motor surplus outlets or online. A fair ratio is about seven amps per thirty mph wind. For this wind DIY project cut the square tubing to the desired height. Cut some of the PVC pipe and shape it to the slightly contoured edges of your propeller blades.
You will run these through a hub that connects to the treadmill motor. Safely install the wiring that connects the motor to which is then used to power any other type of electrical device of equal power. This is an extremely general look at a possible rig, but it’s a start for many people who don’t know where to begin.
