For fun in the sun, few things can top the recreational value of a pool in your backyard. It’s great for exercise, for relaxation and for strengthening and toning the muscles. When designing an in-ground pool or purchasing an above-ground pool, many pool owners do not realize that the purchase price is only a small part of expenses of owning a pool. You can mitigate some costs by adding solar swimming pool heating equipment.

The Expense of Heating Your Pool

Cleaning and treating pool water is important, but the single biggest ongoing expense may be the cost of heating water in the pool to a comfortable level. In cooler climates, you may only be able to use the pool for a few weeks during the summer unless you pay for heating. The energy required to heat hundreds of gallons of water in your pool and to keep it at a comfortable temperature can be significant unless you arrange to use the sun’s power to warm the water.

How Do Solar Heaters Work?

Solar heating for your pool makes use of the pump, filter and circulating system that is already included with most pools. The water is pumped through the filter and then into the solar collector where it is warmed by solar energy and then mixed with pool waters. This additional stop in the pumping system can save you hundreds of dollars each year in pool heating costs.

Other Energy Conserving Measures

It’s a smart move to reduce heating costs with a solar pump, but there are other ways to conserve energy. Keep the pool temperature at the minimum level that you are comfortable with. If the water becomes too warm, you can circulate it through the solar collectors at night.
