Roof Shingles Solar Panels Are Paving The Way For Future Solar Energy Users
By: Ryan Narendra
Using solar energy to power everything from a small light to an entire house has been the goal for decades. Many people have begun building newer houses with solar panels already incorporated into them. There are some older homes where part or all of the house’s energy has been switched from the grid to solar panels. One of the newest inventions are roof shingles solar panels. These look like shingles, but are actually miniature solar panels.
This innovative design allows for tiny solar panels to be placed right alongside asphalt shingles. These cost anywhere from 10 to 15 percent less to install than the traditional solar panels. Solar shingles are even quicker to install than larger solar panels, due to their size and location. Another name for these miniature panels are phototvoltaic cells. There are a few different varieties of solar shingles available today.
Some solar shingles are the size of actual shingles and they will set in the place of a few asphalt shingles, therefore forming a strip of small solar shingles. There are some shingles that are the actual size of an individual asphalt shingle and contain many silicon solar cells in them. The newest version of the solar shingle looks and even flexes like an asphalt shingle by using ultra thin film solar cell technology.
These sun absorbing shingles are usually able to be stapled directly to the roofing cloth, just like a traditional shingle. However, there are some solar shingles that require a bit different mounting instructions, especially the kind that are mixed in with the asphalt shingles. While these may be able to be dispersed among the asphalt shingles, they usually have a deep purplish-blue color to them. This is sometimes a concern for people who want all their shingles to match in color.
Many homeowners find that the size of these solar shingles is much more aesthetically pleasing than the traditional solar panels. The small design of these shingles is easier to blend into the roof. While these are smaller than traditional panels, they still have to be converted from DC to AC. Houses use alternating current to power lights, appliances, etc, but solar panels and shingles produce power in direct current, hence the need for the conversion.
Assembly of houses in larger cities, especially areas where there is an ample amount of sunlight, is including roof shingles solar panels in the design. While this may bump up the price of the house a bit, it is well worth the amount of energy and money that will be saved in the future. These houses are also much more ecologically friendly than traditional houses.
